Some Images from Hillary House
Dr. Robert William Hillary, shown here, purchased this house from Dr. Frederick Strange who previously had acquired it from Dr. Walter Geikie. The Hillary family were by far the longest owners and occupiers of the house, from 1876 until 1992, through three generations. They called it The Manor.
The drawing room at Hillary House provides an excellent example of how a house and its furnishings change over time. The white marble mantel was added by Dr. Frederick Strange.
Against one wall of the drawing room is a Newmarket-made melodeon converted into a desk.
A stereopticon invites today’s visitors to experience the Victorian equivalent of the Viewmaster. The stereopticon is part of Hillary House’s study collection and may be used to give visitors a further sense of living history.
